FREMONT, Calif. » Authorities say bones found in the San Francisco Bay Area four years ago were found to be those of a Swedish exchange student who disappeared in the area in 1982.

Alameda County sheriff’s Sgt. Patricia Wilson tells the Marin Independent-Journal Monday that the seven bones found in Fremont have been found to be those of 21-year-old Elizabeth Martinsson, a foreign student who was going to the College of Marin when she disappeared.

Wilson says the U.S. Department of Justice made the match in November using dental records. She says Martinsson’s remains were cremated and returned to her family in Uddevalla, Sweden. The cause of death was not determined.

A 31-year-old convicted rapist from Los Angeles was found driving Martinsson’s car shortly after her disappearance. He was convicted of auto theft, but authorities could not tie him to her death.
