Coast Guard aids 2 spear fishermen off Hawaii island

The Coast Guard located two spear fishermen who were pulled four miles away by strong currents Saturday off Hawaii island.

The men were reported missing about 10:20 a.m. by the captain of the 19-foot Tigger Too recreational boat.

The Coast Guard said the boat captain was in the area while the men were in the water, but when the captain returned to their entry point, the men were no longer there.

A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules airplane crew began a search and spotted the missing divers about eight miles east of Leleiwi Point and four miles from their original location. The crew dropped two smoke flares to mark the divers’ position.

The boat captain responded and pickup the two divers, who were in good condition.
