A 30-year-old man could face a petty misdemeanor trespass charge after he jumped a fence and broke his ankle early Thursday morning trying to reach the closed Haiku Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, in Kaneohe.

A Fire Department spokesman said the man took a taxi to Puoni Place and then broke his ankle jumping a fence trying to reach Haiku Stairs,  which has been closed since 1987.

The hiker called for help and fire rescue personnel reached him just before 4 a.m..

He was turned over to police and paramedics.
