Wahine soccer team to open season vs. Stanford, Cal

Hawaii soccer coach Michele Nagamine announced her team’s 2015 schedule on Thursday.

The Rainbow Wahine open the season against Pac-12 powers Stanford and Cal in the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic, starting Aug. 21 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Stanford appeared in the 2014 NCAA women’s soccer final four.

“I am very happy with our schedule for 2015,” said Nagamine, UH’s fifth-year coach, in a release. “Our local soccer fans love watching top-ranked programs play in Hawaii and this year’s schedule will not disappoint them. We open with perennial soccer powers Stanford and Cal and then have Wyoming and Denver the following weekend. It is a luxury for us to be home the first two weekends so that we can hopefully establish a rhythm that will carry us through some tough road trips.”

Those are four of UH’s 10 home matches on the regular season. UH will play 18 in all.

The eight-match Big West Conference slate begins Oct. 1 at home against UC Santa Barbara.

UH, led by returnees Storm Kenui, Kama Pascua, Tiana Fujimoto and others, hopes to advance to its first Big West tournament by finishing in the top four of the league standings.
