Anahola man gets 20-year sentence in liquor store robbery
A state judge on Kauai sentenced a 29-year-old Anahola man Wednesday to 20 years in prison for a violent armed robbery at a Kapaa liquor store in February.
Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe also sentenced Kawika I. Manaku to an additional five years in prison for violating his probation for two previous burglary convictions.
Manaku must serve the two prison terms back to back for a total of 25 years.
Watanabe also ordered Manaku to spend at least 11 years and eight months behind bars before he is eligible for parole.
The Hawaii Paroling Authority can impose a higher minimum term.
Manaku pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery in March.
In the robbery case, surveillance video shows Manaku, armed with a weapon, repeatedly hit the owner of Kapaa Liquor & Wine Co. on Feb. 2, the county prosecutor’s office said in a news release.
The Garden Island had reported that the victim, 70, suffered multiple lacerations to his face and head for which he received stitches and staples. He also suffered a dislocated finger.
