Hawaii County police are asking for witnesses to come forward with information about a large fight involving an estimated 40 people and the discharge of a gun Sunday at the Pohoiki boat ramp in Puna.

Police received a call at 4:10 p.m. of an affray and a gunshot being heard. When officers arrived, they found 33-year-old man with injuries to his face and body consistent with an assault.

He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, and was later reported in stable condition.

Police said a 15-year-old boy reported he had been punched and choked, but declined treatment.

Officers found a semi-automatic pistol in nearby brush that matched the description of the firearm shot in the air.

Police returned after another fight was reported later that afternoon, and found several people arguing. They arrested a 32-year-old Keaau man on an outstanding bench warrant.

Police have opened assault cases and other related cases.

Anyone with information or who witnessed Sunday’s events is asked to call police at 935-3311 or Officer Brian Souki, 965-2716.
