A one-year-old boy died Friday after he was hit by a truck that was backing up on the Veterans of Foreign Wars property on Maui.

The driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado truck, a 30-year-old Pukalani man, was reversing and backed into the toddler, who was behind the truck at 4:25 p.m. at 2110 Ulunui Road in Kihei.

The boy suffered critical life threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he died.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Police are investigating if speed, drugs, or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

This is Maui County’s 12th traffic fatality, compared to 14 at this time last year.
