The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life: Portland, Oregon

  • ALVINA SHINSEKI / SPECIAL TO THE STAR-ADVERTISER
Diana Seppelfrick of Makakilo required photographic evidence of a popular new restaurant in Portland, Ore., with a name that would inspire giggles from island residents. The Kukai Ramen & Izakaya chain has restaurants in Japan and Taiwan. There are also multiple outlets in Washington and Oregon, but, Seppelfrick says, “This wouldn’t work in Hawaii.” The sound-alike word kukae means excrement in Hawaiian.
