Some 5,000 gallons of sewage Monday overflowed from a manhole in Kaanapali, Maui County officials said in a news release.

The overflow was caused by a failure at the Lahaina Pump Station No. 2 on North Honoapiilani Highway, officials said. The sewage flowed from 11:30 to 11:45 a.m.

The sewage flowed from the sewer manhole into a storm drain and discharged into the Kaanapali Golf Course Pond, officials said. The area was cleaned and disinfected, and warning signs were posted.

Bacteriological tests are being conducted to determine if the spill reached the ocean, the county said. The state Department of Health has been notified.
