Evacuation of 100 homes in Wahiawa lifted as wildfire wanes
Firefighters have lifted a mandatory evacuation of about 100 homes and some buildings on a U.S. Navy installation in the Wahiawa area.
Prompted by potential fire and smoke inhalation hazards tied to a wildfire, the evacuation began at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, with Wahiawa District Park serving as a shelter for the evacuees.
The residential evacuations occurred on Puninoni Street and Puninoni Place and Nonohe Street and Nonohe Place.
Honolulu Fire Department officials lifted the evacuation at about 8 p.m., after determining that the fire appeared to have died down.
HFD released some companies with 29 personnel, which were making a stand behind homes along the ridge near the water tank at the end of California Avenue, but are planning continue to maintain a fire watch overnight, said fire Capt. David Jenkins.
Three wildfires in the Wahiawa area have so far burned a total of 475 acres, officials said Monday evening.
