Service restored to Moanalua customers affected by attempted copper theft

Hawaiian Telcom repair crews restored service to all customers who were affected by the attempted copper theft in Moanalua. Despite the weather conditions, crews completed the work at around 5 p.m. Sunday.

“Hawaiian Telcom thanks customers for their patience and encourages anyone with information about this attempted copper theft incident to contact the Honolulu Police Department,” the company said in a statement.

A 1,500-pair cable in Moanalua was damaged late Thursday evening in what is believed to be the latest in an ongoing series of copper theft incidents.

The line was not completely severed and Hawaiian Telcom officials speculated that the would-be thieves may have been shocked by the high-voltage cables.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. in a manhole off the bike path, triggering alarms at the company’s Network Operations Center.

As part of the extensive repair effort, crews had to complete some 6,000 splices in the cable.
