Warning signs to remain from Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor to Kakaako

The state Department of Health said Friday afternoon that waters in the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor, Kewalo Basin Small Boat Harbor and the west side of Kakaako Waterfront Park remain posted.

Meantime, warning signs at Sandy Beach were removed after water quality tests showed improvement following a spill at the East Honolulu Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Signs were also being removed Friday following a wastewater spill that closed waters at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam this week, and at Lake Wilson in Wahiawa.

The state Department of Health Clean Water Branch said samples taken on Wednesday and Thursday in East Honolulu indicated no presence for un-disinfected wastewater that had been discharged on Tuesday.

Hawaii American Water said 1 million gallons of “treated un-disinfected” sewage made its way into the ocean after an underground electrical line failed on Tuesday.

The company’s East Honolulu Wastewater Treatment Plant serves the Hawaii Kai area and is located across from Sandy Beach.

The sewage “had gone through normal processing, including biological treatment, but was not disinfected with chlorine before discharge to our ocean outfall,” the company said in a news release about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The spill at Pearl Harbor occurred at Porter Avenue and 17th Street. Water quality samples were taken on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Clean Water Branch said Friday that warning signs could be removed.
