Man swept away in Wailuku River identified
Police identified an 18-year-old man, who died after being swept down the Wailuku River in Hilo on Wednesday.
Hawaii County police said Kevin Jay Ishikawa, of Hilo, went swimming with three friends near the Pi‘ihonua Bridge and was swept downstream while crossing the river at about 3:34 p.m.
Two friends pulled him from the water and attempted CPR until emergency crews arrived at 3:44 p.m.
Bystanders reported that Ishikawa was underwater for three to five minutes before they were able to retrieve him.
He was taken in critical condition to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m.
Police ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
