Man charged in connection with fatal shooting of Hilo man

A 34-year-old Hilo man was being held on $1 million bail after he was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 39-year-old Hilo man on Thanksgiving.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots at a West Kawailani Street and seeing a car fled the scene. Responding officers found victim Keola Penovaroff outside with multiple gunshot wounds. Penovaroff later died at Hilo Medical Center.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death.

On Sunday, police charged Kalani Lono Kaohimaunu with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and two firearm-related offenses.
