About 100 volunteers at Aloha Stadium helped to distribute 435,000 Girl Scouts cookies during a statewide distribution Thursday. The Girl Scouts will start selling the cookies at public booths for five weekends starting Friday through March 27. The cookies sell for $5 per box. Cookies can also be purchased online. Japan-based artist Daisuke Tajima worked on his drawing “Hyperview of Metallic Superpower” in Commons Gallery at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on Tuesday. Tajima was the winner of an annual Tokyo Midtown contest that partners with the Department of Art and Art History at UH-Manoa, which hosts the artist. Tajima will be drawing at the gallery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. His recent piece is an imagined city that he has created with inspiration from Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong and Shanghai, among others. The intricately drawn piece will take more than two weeks to complete.

An open house was held Saturday at the Queen Emma Summer Palace in observation of the 182nd birthday of Alexander ‘Iolani Liholiho, who reigned as King Kamehameha IV from Jan. 11, 1855, to Nov. 30, 1863. Docents offered spotlight tours and special artifacts that are not usually exhibited were put on display. Mahea Bernal, palace coordinator, showed off a copy of Liholiho’s journal. A bodysurfer broke through the waves Monday at Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore. A high-surf advisory for north and west shores of most islands is expected to be in place until Wednesday morning. A large northwest swell spreading across the island chain prompted weather officials to post the advisory Monday.

The Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic celebrated its 40th anniversary Saturday, Feb. 13 at Makaha Beach Park with surfers competing in more than a dozen divisions, including old-style funsurfing on boards more than 10 feet long. The event was founded in 1977 by venerable surfer Richard “Buffalo” Keaulana, who spent 34 years as a lifeguard in Makaha.
