Memorial services were held on Jan. 22 at Marine Base Hawaii for the Marines missing in a helicopter crash off the North Shore of Oahu. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard today led members of the U.S. House in paying tribute to the 12 Kaneohe Marines.

The U.S. House today paid tribute to the 12 Kaneohe Marines who were killed in the crash of two helicopters during a routine night training mission two miles off the coast of Haleiwa last month.

The tribute on the House floor was led Rep. Tulsi Gabbard who was joined by Rep. Mark Takai and other congressional members representing Marines’ hometowns and other former Marines and veterans.

Gabbard said in her tribute: “Mr. Speaker, today we are gathered rising in memory of the 12 United States Marines stationed at the the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base in my district, who were tragically lost the night of Jan. 14 in a training accident. We must never forget the risk that our service members take every single day, whether they’re in training or in combat, as they put their lives on the line for the security of our nation.

“May we offer them a moment of silence to honor their service and support their loved ones and our entire U.S. Marine Corps in this tragic loss.”

Following her remarks, Gabbard read off the names of each of the Marines and their hometowns.

None of the remains of the Marines have been recovered.

The Navy and Kaneohe Marines are surveying the ocean bottom to determine whether to recover the two CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters belonging to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463.
