Coast Guard, rescue crews searching for visitor swept off rocks on Kauai

Rescue crews are searching for a 28-year-old Chicago man in waters off Queen’s Bath on Kauai today after a large breaking wave swept him out to sea while he was taking photos along the rocks.

According to a news release by the Kauai Fire Department, the man was visiting the tide pool in Princeville at about 10 a.m. with his wife and friends.

Fire rescue crews responded, using a jet ski and Air One rescue helicopter to search for the visitor. Kauai police and the Coast Guard’s HH-65 helicopter are also assisting.

The fire department said Queen’s Bath is a spot known to be extremely dangerous, especially during winter months when there is high surf.

A high surf warning has been in effect for the north- and west-facing shores for Kauai, Oahu, Big Island, Niihau and Molokai and along the north-facing shores of Maui.
