Arizona wins series’ second game against UH
Cesar Salazar’s two-run double broke open a close game and No. 24 Arizona remained in contention to host a regional with a 6-1 victory over Hawaii tonight at Les Murakami Stadium.
Ryan Aguilar doubled and scored three runs and Nathan Bannister (9-2) held Hawaii to one run on five hits in seven innings to allow Arizona to improve to 37-20 for the season.
A win Sunday could give Arizona the best RPI on the West Coast heading into Monday’s reveal of the 64-team field for the NCAA tournament.
Eric Ramirez doubled and scored the only run for Hawaii (23-29), which needs a win Sunday to avoid a fourth consecutive 30-loss season.
Salazar’s double came off reliever Cody Culp but the two runs were charged to start Alex Hatch (3-7), who allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Marcus Doi went 2-for-4 with a double, Josh Rojas had two hits and Kekai Rios singled for UH.
Zach Gibbons, who has seven hits in the series, robbed Rios of a hit with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning that would have scored at least two.
The final game of the 2016 season starts Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
