Arizona sweeps UH baseball in final series
JJ Matijevic doubled home two runs in the top of the ninth inning and No. 24 Arizona completed a three-game sweep of Hawaii with a 5-3 victory today at Les Murakami Stadium.
Matijevic doubled off Hawaii reliever Matt Valencia, who had given up one earned run all season. Both batters who walked scored off Valencia (3-2), who despite taking the loss, finished the season with a 1.03 ERA, which is the lowest ever for a UH pitcher who threw at least 20 innings.
Alfonso Rivas went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Arizona, which won its final six games to finish the season 38-20, but was not given one of 16 NCAA regional hosting sites as announced by the NCAA on Sunday.
Josh Rojas finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Marcus Doi went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored for Hawaii (23-30), which finishes with its fourth consecutive 30-loss season.
Brendan Hornung allowed two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
Lawrence Chew allowed a run in his 68th career relief appearances which tied UH’s all-time record.
Cody Culp gave up two hits in a shutout innings of work to finish with 31 appearances this season, tying for third on UH’s single-season list.
After the game Hawaii honored the 10 seniors on the team.
