KALAHEO >> Four dogs believed to have been taken from the Kauai Humane Society in May were recovered and a fugitive was back behind bars this weekend.

Kauai police found the dogs while hunting 45-year-old Orlando Manguchei. He had been missing for more than a year after his Jan. 14, 2015, disappearance from a transitional home.

Manguchei was serving time for terroristic threatening and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug.

Vice officers looking for Manguchei searched an area known as Filters, a dirt road that leads to Alexander Dam, and found him outside of a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Manguchei tried to run, but officers caught him and found him with a handgun, police said.

Officers found two dogs in the truck and another two dogs in the area of the arrest.

All four were believed to have been taken from the humane society.

The theft included three mixed breed pit bulls, two Airedale terriers, and a 2-month-old lab mix named Arianna that was later found wandering along a road.

The animals were returned to the shelter.

The owner of the truck, a 47-year-old woman sitting in the driver’s seat of the truck, was arrested for hindering prosecution.

“Orlando Manguchei is a well-known criminal on our island and people will feel safer knowing that he is back in custody,” Police Chief Darryl Perry said in a news release.
