I am a happy new mom to a cute and loving 16-month-old who somehow already controls me. It’s that smile and chubby cheeks. I am a proud Navy spouse, and granddaughter to a former plantation worker and a Pearl Harbor survivor. I love to serve others.

What makes you qualified to be a Council member?

12 years of public service as a state representative and City Councilmember. During this time, my district has received over $1 billion for new roads, schools, parks, beaches and various community improvement projects. Created the Hire Leeward Project to connect Leeward residents with Leeward jobs. www.hireleeward.com

What is your one big idea?

We are one of the few cities in the nation that depends almost entirely on taxing our citizens to pay for government services. Our taxpayers can no longer bear this sole burden. Allow private citizens, foundations, businesses, nonprofits and community groups to sponsor city projects for minimal recognition.

What steps should elected city officials take next regarding the rail project?

Fight to finish the rail project to Ala Moana without raising taxes. The state and city can create long-term land use benefits to incentivize private construction of rail stations. Use low interest bonds to float the project and pay it back with increased revenue from private construction.

Why has the city not been able to take more homeless off the street and what would you do to improve the situation?

Homelessness is a complex problem that leaders have struggled with since Frank Fasi was mayor. It can be improved if state and city government works together to invest more in mental health care, affordable housing, and job training.

What steps can elected officials take to ensure city employees behave ethically?

Ensure they follow the law and always put the people first. We must remember that we are servants and we are blessed to have the opportunity to help people.

As an elected city official, what would you do to improve the city’s affordable housing supply?

Invest in affordable housing. Allow for the development of more accessory dwelling units within single family lots to allow local families to gain additional income while providing affordable housing to others. Streamline the city’s affordable housing permit process. These measures passed during my first term in office.
