An 89-year-old Pearl City woman died today after she fell down in a Pearl City parking lot and was run over by a car.

According to police, the woman was walking from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf to Foodland shortly after 9 a.m. when she fell and was run over by a 2014 Nissan vehicle operated by a 37-year-old man. Police said the man reported he didn’t see the woman.

This was the 30th traffic-related fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 30 at the same point last year.

HOpe she was not one of the Sr. Bowlers heading to Leeward Bowl. Lots of us “Old Farts” in that parking lot.

Prayers for her and her ohana. So many near misses in that parking lot. Both pedestrians and drivers need to stop, look, and proceed with caution! Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen folks just walk out without looking or back out of a stall without looking.

My deepest ALOHA to her ohana.

A reason why all vehicles should be equipped with rear-view cameras.

    • krusha says:

That and those sonar sensors, since most people don’t even bother checking the cameras when backing up and will use their mirrors instead.

    • cojef says:

The article did not indicate vehicle was backing? Most newer model cars are equipped with rear-view cameras. Most accidents in parking lots are caused by poor lighting and carelessness.

That’s the reason why I back into a stall so when I exit I can see what’s in front of me. Hawaii has been criticized with reverse parking but after going through Smith Driving System my company sent us employees, it makes perfect sense.

I’m with you. I always back into a stall, because It’s ten times easier to drive out of the stall. Clear vision 180 degrees. But before backing in look to see that it’s clear. Actually it’s easier to back in because the turning wheels are in front of the car.

Problem with reversing into a stall is someone swooping in and stealing it.

      • Blunt says:

I concur. Back up cameras make it so easy to back up accurately. Makes me laugh when people think I am blind. Cameras so good you can backup down to an inch!

Come on HNL, we CAN beat the record! I KNOW it!!

This story offers almost zero facts of the incident but so many people seem to know how and why it happened.
