McCain sticks by Trump despite myriad reasons not to

PHOENIX >> Eight years after stumping across the nation as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain is back on the campaign trail in his home state as he faces a primary challenge and a strong Democratic opponent in the general election.

Dogging McCain as well is GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, whose statements in recent weeks have prompted rebukes from the longtime Arizona lawmaker.

McCain lashed out at Trump for attacking the parents of an Army captain killed in Iraq in 2004. Trump drew the ire or many in his party for comments he made attacking Khizr and Ghazala Khan, who spoke at the Democratic National Convention.

McCain also slammed Trump for saying he might not come to the aid of NATO countries that failed to fulfill their financial obligations.

Yet McCain has stuck by his support for Trump and reiterated it to reporters this week.

Trump’s greatest success — normalizing the abnormal — is beginning to dissipate. When a Pulitzer Prize–winning liberal columnist (Eugene Robinson) and a major conservative foreign-policy thinker and former speechwriter for George Shultz under Ronald Reagan (Robert Kagan) simultaneously question Trump’s psychological stability, indeed sanity, there’s something going on (as Trump would say).

Amid widespread chatter that Donald Trump could drop out of the presidential race before Election Day, Republican insiders in key battleground states have a message for The Donald: Get out.

That’s according to The POLITICO Caucus — a panel of activists, strategists and operatives in 11 swing states. The majority of GOP insiders, 70 percent, said they want Trump to drop out of the race and be replaced by another Republican candidate — with many citing Trump’s drag on Republicans in down-ballot races. But those insiders still think it’s a long-shot Trump would actually end his campaign and be replaced by another GOP candidate.

“I’d rather take our chances with nearly anyone else than continue with this certain loser who will likely cost the Senate and much more,” said a New Hampshire Republican — who, like all respondents, completed the survey anonymously.
“The effect Trump is having on down-ballot races has the potential to be devastating in November,” added a Florida Republican. “His negative image among Hispanics, women and independents is something that could be devastating to Republicans. Trump’s divisive rhetoric to the Hispanic community at large has the potential to be devastating for years to come.”

Trump has given no indication that he’s considering quitting, and his campaign insists his perseverance is one of his best attributes. But two network reports recently suggested senior GOP leaders were eyeing how that process would work, just in case.

A Trump exit from the race after he’s been formally nominated would trigger a rarely used vacancy rule in the national Republican Party’s rulebook. That rule empowers the Republican National Committee — a 168-member panel that includes three GOP leaders from every state and territory — to select a replacement. The RNC is also authorized to reconvene the national convention, which would be all but logistically impossible.

A new poll puts Hillary Clinton 15 percentage points ahead of Donald Trump among registered voters, according to the latest McClatchy-Marist survey, released on Thursday.

The poll, which shows Clinton leading her Republican rival 48 percent to 33 percent, indicates a dramatic surge for the Democratic nominee since last month’s edition of the survey, when she led Trump by just 42 percent to 39 percent.

  7. Ikefromeli says:

Over the past few days, Trump has destroyed this middle ground. He’s exposed the wet noodle Republicans as suckers, or worse. Trump has shown that he is not a normal candidate. He is a political rampage charging ever more wildly out of control. And no, he cannot be changed.

He cannot be contained because he is psychologically off the chain. With each passing week he displays the classic symptoms of medium-grade mania in more disturbing forms: inflated self-esteem, sleeplessness, impulsivity, aggression and a compulsion to offer advice on subjects he knows nothing about.

His speech patterns are like something straight out of a psychiatric textbook. Manics display something called “flight of ideas.” It’s a formal thought disorder in which ideas tumble forth through a disordered chain of associations. One word sparks another, which sparks another, and they’re off to the races. As one trained psychiatrist said to me, compare Donald Trump’s speaking patterns to a Robin Williams monologue, but with insults instead of jokes.

  8. Ikefromeli says:

He also cannot be contained because he lacks the inner equipment that makes decent behavior possible. So many of our daily social interactions depend on a basic capacity for empathy. But Trump displays an absence of this quality.

He looks at the grieving mother of a war hero and is unable to recognize her pain. He hears a crying baby and is unable to recognize the infant’s emotion or the mother’s discomfort. He is told of women being sexually harassed at Fox News and is unable to recognize their trauma.

The same blindness that makes him impervious to global outrage makes it impossible for him to make empathetic connection. Fear is his only bond.

Some people compare Trump to the great authoritarians of history, but that’s wrong. They were generally disciplined men with grandiose plans. Trump is underdeveloped and unregulated.

He is a slave to his own pride, compelled by a childlike impulse to lash out at anything that threatens his fragile identity. He appears to have no ability to experience reverence, which is the foundation for any capacity to admire or serve anything bigger than self, to want to learn about anything beyond self, to want to know and deeply honor the people around you.

  12. Ikefromeli says:

Recent polls show Trump trailing Clinton by 9 to 14 points, margins that would make for the largest general election blowout since 1984–Nate Silver 538.

The so called mainstream news media have made it clear they will convulse and contort ~~ and if need be, spike ~~ the news to the extent needed to assure the victory of crooked Hillary.

In that context they have found it necessary to weaponize polls and hurl them like harpoons in hope of wounding their prey.

Most now realize that if you promise a “pollster” enough money and tell him what “scientific” polling results to deliver, he will do so on demand. The keys to creative polling are to be found in how questions are worded and how the “sample” population is determined.

      • Ikefromeli says:

Nate Silver is one of the most accurate pollsters in the nation, further, who does NOT work for any particular party. If you want to address this from a critical perspective talk about him methodology and review of sample size, if not, shut the erroneous pie hole.
