No evidence Trump provided child care services for employees

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump signs autographs during a campaign rally at the BB&T Center.

NEW YORK >> When Donald Trump vowed this week to make child care more accessible and affordable, it was just the second time during his White House campaign that he’s talked about an issue that affects millions of working Americans with young children.

The first came months ago in Iowa, when the eventual Republican nominee touted his own record as a business owner during a candidate Q&A, telling voters he provided on-site child-care service for his employees.

There is no evidence, however, that any such programs exist.

The billionaire real estate mogul, who previously voiced his opposition to government-funded universal pre-K programs, said in Newton, Iowa, in November 2015 that he had visited many companies that offered workers on-site child-care centers — and added that he offered such programs himself.

“You know, it’s not expensive for a company to do it. You need one person or two people, and you need some blocks, and you need some swings and some toys,” Trump said. “It’s not an expensive thing, and I do it all over. And I get great people because of it. Because it’s a problem with a lot of other companies.”

Trump pointed specifically to two programs: “They call ‘em Trump Kids. Another one calls it Trumpeteers, if you can believe it. I have ‘em. I actually have ‘em, because I have a lot of different businesses.”

Trump went on to describe “a room that’s a quarter of the size of this. And they have all sorts of — you know, it’s beautiful — they have a lot of children there, and we take care of them. And the parent when they leave the job — usually in my case it’s clubs or hotels — when they leave the job, they pick up their child and their child is totally safe.”

“They even come in during the day during lunch to see their child. It really works out well,” he said.

But the two programs Trump cited — “Trump Kids” and “Trumpeteers” — are programs catering to patrons of Trump’s hotels and golf club. They are not for Trump’s employees, according to staff at Trump’s hotels and clubs across the country.

“Trump Kids” is described on the Trump Hotel Collection website as “a special travel program designed to help make your next family vacation a big hit.” Its offerings include “kid-friendly amenities like kiddie cocktails, coloring books and no-tear bath amenities.”

“The Trumpeteer Program” is described on the website of Trump National Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, as “a program created specifically for our youngest members, ages three to twelve, which offers daily and evening child care, monthly newsletters and weekly events!”

When asked about on-site child care, employees at Trump’s hotels and clubs across the country expressed confusion and explained the two programs are for guests and members only.

“No, there’s no child care,” said Maria Jaramillo, 36, a housekeeper at Trump International Hotel Las Vegas, where workers have been pushing Trump to sign a union contract.

Jaramillo is a mother of four children who has worked at the hotel for nearly eight years.

“It would make it much more easy to take our kids to day care at work,” she said and laughed when told of Trump’s comments from Iowa about child care. “If they have child care, at least they should tell us.”

A collection of Trump employee handbooks makes no mention of child care. The online Trump Hotels “employee benefits” section lists health care, tuition reimbursement, paid time off, complimentary golf and an internet café, but no on-site child care services.

In New York, where the Trump Organization is based, the city’s health department database of child care centers has no record of any licensed facilities at any of Trump’s properties, aside from a private school that leases space at 40 Wall Street.

Asked directly whether Trump’s businesses offered child care to employees, his presidential campaign responded with a statement from Jill Martin, vice president and assistant general counsel at the Trump Organization.

“The Trump Organization is very proud of the family-friendly environment it fosters throughout its portfolio,” she said. “The policies and practices allowing employees to enjoy a healthy work-life balance vary from property to property. We take an individualized approach to helping employees manage family and work responsibilities.”

The campaign did not respond to follow up questions, or agree to make Martin available for an interview.

Trump on Monday proposed new tax exemptions for child care as part of what his aides say will be a larger push to make child care more accessible and affordable to working-class families. Child care is a top expense for many families, surpassing the cost of college and even housing in many states.

“They’re suffering, they’re suffering,” Trump said. “We’re going to get them this much-needed relief.”

Trump has credited his embrace of the issue to his daughter Ivanka, who vouched for her father’s treatment of his employees at the Republican National Convention last month. “When a woman becomes a mother, she is supported, not shut out,” she said.

The new policy is a departure from Trump’s comments on the issue during the GOP primaries. In an interview with Fox News Business in October 2015, Trump expressed skepticism about paid family leave and said he opposed the idea of free pre-K.

“Well, I don’t like it, because eventually you’re going to have to raise everybody’s taxes,” he said. “There is no such thing as free.”

I hope the name of the employee quoted above was changed for publication. Drumpf’s vindictiveness is legendary, and she’ll be lucky to keep her job if he can figure out who she is.

    • cwo4usn says:

You confuse Trump with the Clinton Crime Syndicate. Typical liberal hit piece – unnamed sources and the SA picks it up.

      • HanabataDays says:

The information is easily verifiable — and was.

Drumpf’s statements are on the record. None of the employee handbooks or other info from any of his businesses say child care is an option. None of his businesses’ spokespeople claim it is. The child care is for patrons of a couple of his enterprises that cater to the high end. Clearly Drumpf’s statement is bogus.

The employee who was willing to go on the record is not “unnamed”. That’s why I hoped she wouldn’t end up getting fired.

“Liberal hit piece” or not, it appears to be squarely on target — unlike your kneejerk response.

        • Ken_Conklin says:

Reliable sources have confirmed that Hillary Clinton never provided child care to any of her employees in any of the companies she owned. Oh, wait a minute. Hillary never owned any companies or paid any employees. Hillary and “her” employees have all been paid by the taxpayers, and had no employer-provided childcare.

        • klastri says:

Ken_Conklin – The point is that Mr. Trump is a pathological liar – someone who knows what they are saying is a lie, and also knows that the person being told the lie knows it’s a lie. He’s lies needlessly, easily and completely about things that can be immediately disproven. It’s a significant personality defect, and he’s had it a long time.

Mr. Trump is profoundly mentally ill. He’s going to lose the election is an electoral college landslide.

        • advertiser1 says:

Ken, this has nothing to do with Hillary, this is about another Trump lie

      • BluesBreaker says:

He’s false claims are coming at such a fast pace it’s hard to keep up with them. Sometimes he uses his mouthpiece Fox News to help him. Like when his campaign fed Sean Hannity a story that was then confirmed by the Trump campaign. Already, you know it’s a lie.

I’m speaking about the recent fairy tale about Trump sending his private jet down to Camp Lejeune in 1991 to ferry home some Gulf War soldiers whose military flight had been FUBARed. We all know perfectly well that Trump would never do something like this unless there was some kind of massive publicity tied to it, because Trump never engages in any charitable act unless there’s something in it for him. So it’s already about 99 percent likely to be fiction.

Sure enough, it turns out that the real story is just a demonstration of Trump’s lousy business judgment—something far more common than Trump’s acts of charity. When he bought the Eastern Shuttle in 1989 and turned it into the Trump Shuttle, he negotiated a terrible deal. Not only did he overpay, but he also accepted five extra planes he didn’t need instead of a lower purchase price. So the Army leased the planes from him and used them for various tasks in order to free up military planes. In 1991, they were assigned to ferry troops home from Camp Lejeune. The U.S. Army not Trump flew the troops and Trump had nothing to do with it, except making some money off of the military.

Is this a big deal? On the scale of other Trump lies, I suppose not, when compared with insulting a Hispanic judge, attacking a Muslim family that lost a son in Iraq, and expressing his hope that someone will murder Hillary Clinton. But it’s sort of Trump in a nutshell: Take credit for a charitable act even though it’s a flat-out lie that’s trivially easy to fact-check and debunk. He doesn’t care. He know that guys like Sean Hannity will hype it to his credulous Fox News audience, and none of them will ever read the reporter who uncovered Trump’s latest lie.

agee..trump is a total phony. He is one big advertising campaign for himself and his brand as “funny man” on reality TV. Republicans should never have allowed him to run on their party label. He is in no way a republican or a conservative. He is all about himself. Dangerous, immoral, intellectually inept man.

      • amela says:

Just get some toys and a swing and we’re in business, he he. Gotta love the simple thinker that’s what my 3 year old grand daughter would say. Maybe she should run for president.

    • allie says:

agree..I just feel so sorry for the uneducated, unhealthy failed white male supporters with their lack of high school degrees. They actually believed the slop he was feeding them. Now, nowhere to go for entertainment and hatred. Trump is done as a candidate but his sad followers may be a lasting problem for the nation.

  3. 962042015 says:

No evidence of the media’s credibility in any of this reporting. How about some reporting on evil-hillary’s shenanigans while at state….

    • serious says:

9620, correct. Now there is plenty of evidence on that–they have the smoking gun with the emails–where is the DOJ on all of this? Probably at Ferguson helping to celebrate the Brown anniversary!!

      • Vector says:

Serious, you are like Trump, change the subject and distract. Trump, like Hitler, Putin, Mussolini, Franco, has no empathy or compassion for people. He is just as dangerous as all these tyrants. They all used demagoguery and hate propaganda to attract rabid followers.

        • dontbelieveinmyths says:

Are you kidding me? It is the liberal media who looks for every little thing about Trump and flashes it on their headlines like it was some earth shattering news. How about following up on the email situation with Hilary? How about digging deeper into the blatant lies that she refuses to admit to?

Multiple FBI investigations are underway involving potential corruption charges against the Clinton Foundation, according to a former senior law enforcement official.

The investigation centers on New York City, where the Clinton Foundation has its main offices, according to the former official who has direct knowledge of the activities.

Prosecutorial support will come from various U.S. Attorneys Offices — a major departure from other centralized FBI investigations.

        • mctruck says:

yeah, right; go dream up more stories just like trump.

        • BluesBreaker says:

“Multiple investigations are underway.” No they aren’t. You’re just like Trump. Make it up or (more likely) repeat something you heard in the wingnutosphere. Looser like Trump.

        • sarge22 says:

Prosecutorial support will come from various U.S. Attorneys Offices — a major departure from other centralized FBI investigations.

The New York-based probe is being led by Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

The official said involvement of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York “would be seen by agents as a positive development as prosecutors there are generally thought to be more aggressive than the career lawyers within the DOJ.”

The former official said the investigation is being coordinated between bureau field offices and FBI managers at headquarters in Washington, D.C. The unusual process would ensure senior FBI supervisors, including Director James Comey, would be kept abreast of case progress and of significant developments.

The reliance on U.S. attorneys would be a significant departure from the centralized manner in which the FBI managed the investigation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server and email addresses.

That investigation was conducted with agents at FBI headquarters, who coordinated with the Department of Justice’s National Security Division (NSD).

  4. kekelaward says:

    Who cares?

The government shouldn’t be involved in day care at all (except maybe for a pilot program dealing with the aged and infirmed in congress and the courts).

    • HawaiiCheeseBall says:

You should care when a presidential candidate just makes stuff up (tells lies) to make him look good. Kinda like when he said he had a letter from the NFL saying they were concerned about the dates for the presidential debates and the NFL said flat out that they did not send such a letter, and kind of like when he says he opposed the Iraq war but before that on the Howard Stern show he says he was ok with it. After a while a patter starts to play out.

  5. mctruck says:

Donald raised his whole family to be big-time-liars, just like daddy.

  6. mctruck says:

    Speaking of lies:

John Koskinen; the Commissioner of Internal Revenue Service, says on trump’s assertion that he’s being audited and there cannot release any tax returns information to the public. “It’s rare for an individual taxpayer to be audited every year as donald trump says he has.” “Usually after an audit it’s a number of years before you hear from us again.”
Look up the following article for a clearer explanation:

    blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2016/02/26/irs-commissioner-says-donald-trumps-audit-scenario-rare/

    Liar, Liar, PANTS on FIRE.

    • mctruck says:

He’s just very afraid of what his tax returns will reveal.

      • kekelaward says:

If it’s so bad, why isn’t he in the IRS tax court defending himself right now? Why hasn’t the IRS done anything yet?

        • mctruck says:

That’s why he has many lawyers on his payroll. Used to tie up the judicial system for years.

        • klastri says:

He’s not afraid of the IRS.

He’s probably concerned because he’s not nearly as wealthy as he has lied that he is. And he has given almost nothing to charity, as he has lied he has.

        • HIE says:

Nobody said his tax filings broke the law, just that they’ll make him look bad. Could be that he pays either very little (under 10%) or absolutely nothing in taxes. Could also be that his taxes would show that he’s grossly overstated his own wealth. A politically negative tax return doesn’t mean an law-breaking tax return. If you had more than a handful of brain cells, you’d realize that.

    • kekelaward says:

      Key word: “Rare”.

      But not impossible.

      • klastri says:

He’s also lying when he said that tax returns cannot be released during an audit.

There’s no such law. He’s afraid that the tax returns will prove to his clueless followers that he’s a fraud.

This is merely another example of Trump BS. What’s scary about the situation is that his rabid fans don’t care what a BS artist he is.

    • lespark says:

You got it. They’re both liars. Either you pick one or don’t vote.

    • cwo4usn says:

Just like you liberals don’t care about what a BS artist Clinton is. Be fair, who’s been caught in the most lies? I’d bet it would be Clinton, as she’s been around lying for over 40 years thus she has the most experience. Bet she even taught old Slick Willie how to lie. What’s your definition of “IS”? I did not have sexual relations with that woman…we finally figured it out that he was talking about Hillary.

      • mctruck says:

        Trump, hands down.

      • inHilo says:

Actually, Trump has been around longer than Hilary, but she has been working in the public sector while Trump has been in the private sector where lies are less likely to be considered news. It’s only business, right? Politicians are held to a higher standard, including, at least according to your comment, the necessity to appear sexually attractive. I wonder if Mr. Trump without his money could attract even one of his three wives.

      • klastri says:

Trump. By an order of magnitude. Definitely Trump.

  8. lespark says:

The Media has to do better than this story to cover up the huge stink that should be overwhelming the Crooked Hilliary Campaign. In fact it’s so bad it’s already stinking up the place.

  9. lespark says:

This is what Top News is.
CNN reports that three FBI field offices were in agreement and wanted an investigation launched earlier this year, but the Loretta Lynch-led DOJ pushed back pointing to a preliminary investigation done on the Clinton Foundation a year before, after the book ‘Clinton Cash’ was released.
At that point, not enough evidence was there to launch a case, and some at the Justice Department feared the request for a fresh investigation would look politically-motivated, especially in light of the FBI’s investigation into Clinton’s private email server.
The FBI wanted to pursue a lead from a bank that tipped them off to suspicious activity from a foreigner who had donated to the Clinton Foundation.

      Les,

Aren’t you Chumpsters tired of the Chump making you all look like fools. Yesterday the Chumpsters were all up in arms agreeing with and defending the Chumpster for his claim that Obama founded ISIS. All you Chumpsters were defending the Chump. Then today he says he really didn’t mean it, but he was being “sarcastic”! Think about that, Chump just blurts out stuff that is stupid and indefensible, then Chumpsters like you and Sarge go out of y our way to defend it, then he says it was all a joke. You look like fools.

  10. makiki123 says:

Trump could have won this race if he wasn’t so stupid. He’s not a bright man and keeps showing it every time he opens his mouth. Hillary is crooked and she and her husband are very dishonest people, but they have an opponent who is just not bright and keeps putting both feet in his mouth. The Republican party should be ashamed that they couldn’t put a better candidate to represent their party. They could have easily won this race, but their incompetence over the years letting people like Sarah Palin and the tea party take over their party is what allowed someone like Trump to rise in their party.

  11. bsdetection says:

Just like there is no evidence to support a favorite Hannity story — that Trump sent his private jet to transport 200 Marines on their way home from the Middle East.

Just like there is no evidence that he gave $20M to St. Jude’s children’s center, although he says Thank you when his fans applaud him for doing so.

Just like there was no evidence that he made the donations he announced to veteran’s organizations until the Washington Post exposed his lies.

    • klastri says:

As a matter of fact, there’s a lot of evidence – including documents from the charter company that operated the aircraft – that Mr. Trump and Mr. Hannity are both lying.

The aircraft used for the charter was not the (black) Trump private aircraft, as Mr. Trump lied. It was instead a white Trump Shuttle aircraft that had been seized by the lender after Mr. Trump stopped paying his bills – another common Trump “business” tactic. The charter company arranged for the aircraft receiver to use the aircraft on what is called a “dry lease.”

Mr. Hannity knows that he has been lying about this, and yet he continues. This is because his audience consists of remarkably low information folks. Sad and pathetic.

The Washington Post did extensive research about Mr. Trump’s charity and concluded that he is lying about it. They were able to find about $10,000 in total charitable giving over the past several years. A pathetic cheapskate.

  12. CEI says:

I’m glad to see the enthusiastic fact checking by the AP. Mr. Trump should be held accountable for the BS he tosses out when he speaks, just as they do when Clinton is less than truthful. Oh wait, the AP not only doesn’t fact check Hillary they cheerlead and promote for her just as they have done for little Barry.

  13. lespark says:

This story belongs in the Classifieds.
How’s about the DOJ and / or FBI investigation based on the new emails Crooked Hilliary lied about of their existence. Why weren’t they turned over? State records, she couldn’t touch them. Why was the names redacted? Now you know why the private server. If not for Benghazi nobody would have been the wiser.
Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State takes a train from DC on a Tuesday, leaves to interview two people as prospects to the CGI? Takes time off? How do you do that? Chief of Staff is a full time job or isn’t it? What does she have to do with CGI to interview job applicants without a conflict when Crooked Hilliary signed an agreement not to intermingle?
Letters of concern have been sent with more coming.

Hmm…what is the Trumpzi woman trying to hide???

Is it a requirement that a person be intellectually challenged before supporting Trump?
