Navy freshman Alohi Gilman, a 2015 Kahuku alumnus, was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Gilman, who plays multiple positions for the Midshipmen, had a team-high-tying 10 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles in a 28-24 win over UConn on Saturday in the conference opener for both teams.

Gilman made the biggest play of the game on defense when he recovered a fumble he forced and scored a touchdown to give Navy a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

It was just his second collegiate game.

Higa makes all-tourney team

Willamette (Ore.) sophomore libero Kaylen Higa, a 2015 Punahou alumna, was named to the Austin College Invitational all-tournament team over the weekend.

Higa recorded 86 digs in 14 sets (6.14 digs per set) and added six assists and five service aces for the Bearcats, who went 1-3 in the tournament.

She tied a career high with 27 digs in a four-set victory over Sul Ross (Texas) State University on Friday.

Markwith earns first weekly honor

East Carolina freshman libero Brandee Markwith, a 2016 Punahou alumna, earned her first collegiate weekly honor on Monday making the American Athletic Conference honor roll.

Markwith made the Campbell Invitational all-tournament team over the weekend after helping the Pirates go 3-0 to win the tournament.

She averaged 4.73 digs per set in four appearances overall as the Pirates went 4-0 on the week and are now 8-0 this season.

In the tournament title game against host Campbell, Markwith finished with a career-high 32 digs to become only the second player in the league to record 30 digs in a match this season.

She currently ranks sixth in the AAC with an average of 4.14 digs per set.

>> Ronley Lakalaka, Punahou ’15: The San Diego State linebacker returned an interception 9 yards for his first career touchdown and added four tackles in a 45-40 win over California on Saturday.

>> Kanawai Noa, Punahou ’15:The California wide receiver had two receptions for 16 yards against the Aztecs.

>> Jeremy Tabuyo, Saint Louis ’13: The Texas A&M receiver had two receptions for 40 yards in a 67-0 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday.

>> Isaako Savaiinaea, Punahou ’13: The UCLA linebacker made three tackles in a 42-21 win over UNLV on Saturday.

>> Tau Lotulelei, Maui ’12: The UNLV senior linebacker made five tackles against the Bruins.

>> Psalm Wooching, Kealakehe ’12:The Washington defensive end recorded a sack in his second straight game in the Huskies’ 59-14 win over Idaho on Saturday.

>> Russell Siavii, Leilehua ’12: The Idaho defensive back made four solo tackles against Washington.

>> Hercules Mata’afa, Lahainaluna ’14: The Washington State sophomore defensive lineman had three tackles, with two for a loss, in a 31-28 loss to Boise State on Saturday. Mata’afa is tied for second in the Pac-12 with 31⁄2 tackles for loss.

>> Rex Manu, Mililani ’15: The Oregon sophomore defensive lineman had a tackle for loss in a 44-26 win over Virginia on Saturday.

>> Dutch Claybaugh, Damien ’15: The Gustavus Adolphus sophomore linebacker had seven tackles in a 24-21 win over UW-River Falls on Saturday.

>> Jordan Ta’amu, Pearl City ’15: The New Mexico Military Institute quarterback is leading the NJCAA with 1,052 passing yards and 15 touchdowns in three games.

WOMEN&’S VOLLEYBALL

>> Alyssa Basdavanos, Punahou ’14: The Miami junior setter tallied 121 assists, 14 digs, four kills and three block assists in three matches to help the Hurricanes finish 2-1 in the Wildcat Classic over the weekend.

>> Carly Kan, Punahou ’13: The Missouri senior outside hitter finished with 24 kills, 24 digs and five aces in three matches to help the Tigers finish 2-1 in the Idaho State Invitational over the weekend.

>> Ashley Kelsey, Campbell ’12: The New Mexico junior had 13 digs, five assists and an ace in a four-set win over Arkansas to start the Lobo Classic on Thursday and added a team-high 10 digs and two assists in a three-set loss to No. 1 Nebraska on Saturday.

>> Julia Lau, Punahou ’13: The Dartmouth senior was named to the Dartmouth Invitational all-tournament team after compiling 52 digs and 10 assists in four matches to help Big Green finish 3-1.

>> Zoe Leonard, KS-Hawaii ’15:The Dartmouth sophomore finished with 72 assists, 37 digs and four aces in the Dartmouth Invitational.

>> Kelly Matthews, Punahou ’14: The Princeton junior finished with 26 digs and two kills in three matches as the Tigers finished 1-2 in the Georgetown Classic.

>> Anna Uhr, ‘Iolani ’15:The Harvard sophomore tallied 13 digs in four matches at the Baden Invitational.

>> Claire Feeley, Punahou ’13:The Yale senior had 13 kills and four total blocks and was named to the all-tournament team in the University of Connecticut Dog Pound Challenge.

    Why doesn’t the Star-advertiser recognize all the water polo players from Hawaii playing on the mainland? Here is an example of just one of them:

    MIT freshman Ward Weldon (Honolulu, Hawaii) planted the game winning goal with four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as the water polo team took down nationally ranked No. 16/2 Johns Hopkins University, 13-12, in the final game of the 2016 Bruno Classic on Sunday afternoon at Brown University
