At the Koko Marina Shopping Center on Saturday morning, Santa took a break, and Vincent Cervantes decided to take advantage of the empty seat, filling in as his four granddaughters played along. The sisters are Aphrodite, 5, left; Isis, 13; Heistia, 3; and Athena Garcia-Wang, 10. They all were at the shopping center for the 2016 Keiki Kalikimaka Parade & Christmas Carnival and stayed until the late afternoon to catch a movie at Consolidated Theatres Koko Marina 8.

As it does every year, the Salvation Army served about 2,000 people who showed up for a free meal, entertainment and fellowship Thursday at its 46th annual Thanksgiving meal, at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. About 800 volunteers helped prepare and serve 900 pounds of turkey, 300 pounds of stuffing, 35 gallons of gravy, 350 pounds of rice, 165 dozen rolls, 30 pounds of coffee, 100 gallons of fruit punch and 250 pies.

Firefighters battled a 30-acre brush fi re Thursday night that began threatening homes before 8 p.m. on Kuwale Road. Fire Capt. David
Jenkins said 14 companies and 37 personnel responded to the blaze, which was near 85-1520 Waianae Valley Road. Wind was a factor in
the spread of the fi re, he said. The fi re was reported at 7:12 p.m. The fi rst company arrived at 7:20 p.m. Residents were self-evacuating
on Kuwale Road, Jenkins said.

The city’s Christmas tree was installed on the front lawn of Honolulu Hale on Wednesday with an assist from Mayor Kirk Caldwell, in red,
who helped push the tree into place. Crews harvested the 61-foot Norfolk pine, thought to be 35 to 40 years old, from Kahala Community
Park. The tree will be festooned with lights and decorations in preparation for the 32nd annual Honolulu City Lights celebration on Dec. 3.
