Man critically injured in moped crash in Kaimuki

A 35-year-old Honolulu moped rider was taken to a hospital after he slammed into a utility pole in Kaimuki early today.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., police said the man was traveling eastbound on Maunaloa Avenue in proximity to 8th Avenue when he lost control of his moped and veered into the westbound lane.

He then crashed into a wooden utility pole and was thrown from his moped.

Police said he was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Police said alcohol is a factor. Speed is not involved.

Police closed lanes in both directions on Maunaloa Avenue between 7th and 8th avenues to investigate. Officers reopened the roadway at approximately 4:30 a.m.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Yes and their Brakes are Weak!

    • HanabataDays says:

Most models become unstable when the rider starts to lose control, because the wheels are too small diameter and the rider then starts doing what’s called “tank slappers” in motorcycle riding. Old school Puch, Trac and Derbi mopeds had wheels closer to 125cc dirtbike wheel diameter and were less unstable.
