The event was presented by Animal Communicators Hawaii and featured a free group blessing of animals and, for a donation, individual animal blessings. The lava lake at the summit of Kilauea Volcano rose late this week with dramatic summit inflation, providing improved views of spattering from visitor overlooks in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. This photo was taken Thursday from the rim of Halemaumau Crater, an area that is closed to the public due to ongoing volcanic hazards, and shows spattering in the southeast corner of the lava lake. The main portion of spattering was about 10 yards high.

Members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I -the ranking chiefs for each of its nine chapters -held a commemorative gathering in front of the statue of King Kamehameha I in downtown Honolulu on Tuesday to mark the 124th anniversary of the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani and the government of the kingdom of Hawaii. Dancers from Kamehameha Schools, under the direction of kumu hula Kaleo Trinidad, performed during the ceremony, above.

The Rev. George Scott spoke Sunday during a bell-ringing ceremony and program commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Cathedral of St. Andrew's Parke Chapel in Honolulu. The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade, organized by the Hawaii Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition, begins at 9 a.m. today at Magic Island and ends at Kapiolani Park. A Unity Rally follows the parade at about 11 a.m. at the park bandstand.

A car was heavily damaged but its driver apparently unhurt Saturday after the vehicle hit a pole and flipped over on Beretania Street across from Thomas Square. The driver, wearing the yellow shirt, was pulled out of the car by witnesses as flames engulfed the middle of the vehicle. He later refused medical treatment by paramedics. After police interviewed him, the driver walked away from the scene and continued ewa on Beretania Street. All but one lane of Beretania was blocked by the incident.

Ira Villafranca, left, and Tommy Hite, seniors in the fine arts program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, worked on their large-scale art panels on Sunday -- part of the Art at Large project on the construction wall on Dole Street in front of the UH William S. Richardson School of Law Clinical Building. The two-story, 8,000-square-foot building is slated to open late this year. Villafranca's piece is his vision of a sci-fi universe, while Hite's is a Hawaii scene. The project began in mid-December, with paintings by the 13 participating artists scheduled to be finalized Monday.

Ewa resident Anika Ramos gave birth to son Rory Ramos at 12:01 a.m. Sunday at the Queen's Medical Center. He weighed 7 pounds, 6.6 ounces and was 19.25 inches long. Proud father Richard and Rory's older brothers -- Ryan, 9, left, and Arison, 6 -- gathered around the family's newest addition.
