Fire scorches kitchen of Ala Moana yakiniku restaurant

Firefighters extinguished a small kitchen fire at a restaurant in the Ala Moana area early today.

Eighteen firefighters responded to the blaze at Gyu-Kaku at 1221 Kapiolani Boulevard shortly before 2:50 a.m. When they arrived, they observed a small fire in the kitchen and extinguished it by 3 a.m.

Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said the fire originated on the kitchen stove top. Sprinkler heads that activated at the time of the fire prevented it from spreading.

Jenkins said no one was inside the restaurant at the time of the fire.

The cause is under investigation and a damage estimate has yet to be reported.
