Water use restricted to ‘health and safety needs’ in North Kona
Kona residents must immediately restrict water use to drinking, cooking and hygiene purposes only and cease all landscaping as repairs continue on the Department of Water Supply’s Honokohau Deepwell on Hawaii island, officials said.
The Department of Water Supply has no scheduled completion date for the repairs.
Residents in North Kona were asked to reduce consumption by 25 percent in January when four wells went offline or underwent repairs.
In addition to the new, emergency water restriction limiting use to “health and safety needs,” the Department of Water Supply said in a statement that, “We also recommend that residents store a sufficient amount of water for basic household needs, such as drinking, cooking, and hygiene purposes, in the event of service disruptions.”
Potable water distribution stations have been set up on Ane Keohokalole Highway between Kealakehe Parkway and Kealakehe High School and at Hina Lani between Anini Street and Manu Mele Street.
To report “wasteful use of water,” as the Department of Water Supply calls it, call 961-8060 or email dws@hawaiidws.org.
