Witnesses said a female and male were having difficulty swimming in a pond 100 yards above Rainbow Falls and were seen going under, according to the fire department.

A female drowned after getting in trouble today with a male companion in the Wailuku River and was apparently swept over Rainbow Falls, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.

The unidentified female was found unconscious below the 80-foot falls, according to a report. She was taken out by helicopter and transported by a medical unit to Hilo Medical Center, receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation en route.

Witnesses said the female and male were having difficulty swimming in a pond 100 yards above Rainbow Falls and were seen going under, according to the fire department.

The first unit responded at 12:42 p.m. An aerial, ground and dive search was conducted in the pond and downstream for the missing male. The search was suspended at nightfall and will resume Sunday, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.
