Activity continued steadily in the lava pond in the west pit of Pu'u O'o on Wednesday at Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii island. While making observations at Pu'u O'o, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists witnessed a small rockfall from the western wall, causing spattering. The rockfall briefl y disturbed the pond's surface. Rockfalls into the lava pond are fairly common because the unstable west pit rim and walls have many loose rocks, overhanging ledges and cracks. Pu'u O'o has been active since 1983.
