Firefighters investigate cause of blaze at Hilo apartment complex

Hawaii County firefighters extinguished a fire at a three-story apartment complex on Ululani Street in Hilo on Tuesday.

At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, fire trucks rushed to the scene and found a third-story apartment unit at 270 Ululani St. in flames. All occupants of the apartment complex were evacuated with assistance from firefighters.

The Red Cross was on hand to assist, and opened an evacuation shelter for displaced residents.

The fire engulfed the entire unit and reached an apartment next door as well as shared attic space. Losses were estimated at about $150,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
