Hawaii guard Brocke Stepteau chased down a ball that got away from Utah Valley guard Conner Toolson as the clock ran out in the second half.

Junior guard Sheriff Drammeh scored a career-high 20 points, hitting a clutch 3-pointer with 37.5 seconds to go, and Hawaii hung on for a 70-69 victory over Utah Valley in a physical, foul-plagued nonconference men’s basketball game at the Stan Sheriff Center tonight.

Senior forward Gibson Johnson added 15 points, 11 on free throws, before fouling out for the Rainbow Warriors (7-2).

The teams combined for 54 fouls, including three technicals and a flagrant, with three UVU players fouling out and two from Hawaii.

Junior guard Jake Toolson led the Wolverines (7-5) with 18 points and senior guard Brandon Randolph added 14.

Utah Valley stayed in the game hitting 27 of 32 free throws. Hawaii finished 19-for-29 from the line. The Wolverines had a chance to win it with 2 seconds left but Toolson missed a 3-pointer and, on the ensuing inbounds play, Drammeh tipped the ball to midcourt as time expired.

Hawaii led 35-27 with 2:10 left in the half, helped by two of Drammeh’s 3-pointers over a 27-second span. Utah Valley scored six straight to pull to 35-33, hitting four consecutive free throws when capitalizing on a foul and a technical foul on junior forward Jack Purchase. The Wolverines were 14-for-17 from the line in the opening 20 minutes, going without a field goal for over seven minutes before Toolson’s jumper with 57 seconds before halftime pulled UVU within two.
