Suspect released in connection with Kauai hit-and-run

A male suspect was arrested but released in connection with an apparent hit-and-run crash that occurred Jan. 11 in Hanamaulu on Kauai.

Virgil Caday, 59, of Hanamaulu was arrested Jan. 20 on suspicion of first-degree negligent injury, accidents involving serious bodily injury, inattention to driving, tampering with physical evidence and tampering with a witness, the Kauai Police Department said. He has since been released pending further investigation.

The crash occurred at about 7 a.m. Jan. 11, when police received a report of a 12-year-old girl injured along Laukona Street, just south of the Hoohana Street junction.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the child appeared to have been walking along Laukona Street when she was struck by a vehicle. The involved vehicle was not at the scene when police arrived.

The girl remains in critical condition at The Queen’s Medical Center.
