Big Island resident identified as Puna shooting victim
Hawaii island police were still looking for a suspect or suspects today in a shooting that left a 45-year-old man dead on the side of a road in Puna.
Police identified the victim today as Denton Freitas of Mountain View.
Police said officers found Freitas face down on the side of Anthurium Street with apparent gunshot wounds to his body and spent casings nearby at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday.
Officers were responding to a report from a Fern Acres subdivision resident about hearing multiple gunshots in the area of Anthurium Street.
As police were responding, passing motorists began reporting that a body was on the side of Anthurium Street.
Big Island firefighters also responded and said Freitas died at the scene.

Police opened a murder investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine Freitas’ exact cause of death.
