Carol Leifer in New York on Oct. 4. Leifer will join Bill Maher for his Hawaii shows in December after Wendy Liebman had to cancel.

Veteran standup comic Wendy Liebman was scheduled to accompany Bill Maher on his eighth annual two-show tour of Hawaii next month, but she was hit by a car three weeks ago, leaving her unable to make it to the islands. She officially pulled out Monday.

“I broke both my legs in November. Not on purpose. You know it’s bad if I’m missing the best gig ever,” Liebman said in a statement true to her deadpan voice.

The misfortune gave Liebman new material but left a hole in the show. Maher somehow found a comic with an even deeper resume to fill in.

Carol Leifer joins Maher and Natasha Leggero. They’ll play the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Dec. 30 and Blaisdell Concert Hall on Dec. 31.

Besides her 40-year standup career, Leifer has won four Emmys as a writer on “Seinfeld.” She has also written for “Saturday Night Live” and “The Larry Sanders Show.”

Tickets for the Maui show are $79.50 and up and are available at mauiarts.org. For the Oahu concert, tickets start at $45.50 and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.
