Please oppose the bills supported by the Hawaiian Humane Society to allow dogs in restaurants (“Society supports pet-friendly dining,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Jan. 25). While I am a strong animal supporter, the move is poorly thought out.

There are risks for other diners and restaurant employees (and potential liabilities for restaurants):

>> Dogs sometimes bite, especially when startled. Dog bites are one of the most common liability claims on homeowners’ policies.

>> A distracted owner could easily miss when a dog pees on the floor, a slip-and-fall hazard.

>> If the dogs are too big to fit under the table or do not stay put, they will be in the aisles, a tripping hazard.

As an alternative, I strongly support the wider establishment and improvement of bark parks. Every public park over a minimum size should have a fenced bark-park component with benches and tables in a covered area, with concession stands or food trucks nearby. Then dog lovers can eat and socialize in a comfortable place specifically designated for dogs.
