A letter writer suggests that drivers should pump their brakes as a safety measure (“Drivers should flash brake lights instead,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Feb. 7).
Besides brake and hazard lights, why not also roll down the windows and wave your arms or a flag through an open sun roof? The onus should not be only on the drivers.
My mother taught me how to cross the street. “Look both ways, several times! PAY ATTENTION! Don’t play when crossing! If you don’t listen, YOU’RE GOING GET RUN OVER!”
This was back when there were fewer cars, less speeding, and it all made sense. Today these rules are even more important.
There are already laws requiring drivers to stop for red lights, yield to pedestrians and, at the same time, not speed. The police should enforce the law.
As for the pedestrians, they bear an equal responsibility. Get off the phone, pay attention, don’t play when crossing the street and don’t get run over.
