I had to take a few seconds to fully comprehend the editorial, “Keep rail going, but with caution” (Star-Advertiser, Our View, Feb. 24). Do you mean we haven’t been doing that already?

To make a few clichés that apply: “We have thrown caution to the wind,” “closed the barn door after the horse got out,” “thrown good money after bad.”

When rail was started in 2005, Oahu citizens were convinced that it would be done for $3.7 billion and strict controls would be in place to make sure it was done right. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation was established to ensure the public that politics was taken out of the construction of rail, although the members were all selected by politicians.

Rail was supported by the Star-Advertiser through thick and thin. Triple the price and six years late, we are still asked by the editors to keep rail going.

Last cliché: “It’s time to throw in the towel, Rocky.”
