Being against rail or any public project or any governmental agency in Hawaii is like being for Donald Trump nationwide: There needn’t be any logic at all. And many critics would be against rail even if there were no problems.
So the notion expressed by your estimable columnist David Shapiro that the feds should halt funding because they are investigating some things is not logical at all (“We can’t fix Honolulu rail by denying its obvious ills,” Volcanic Ash, March 3). Will it be better that all work stops, lawsuits begin over canceled contracts, and workers and equipment now marshaled all get sent home until someone finds out what, if anything, is wrong? Do you shut down a business until you find out who is stealing the paper clips or the trucks? Of course not.
No, the responsible action is to continue work, not to reopen the political debate.
Of course an agency should attend to the matters under investigation, and protect from any further wrongdoing. If something is wrong, it will be discovered and the appropriate actions will take place.
