I concur with Gail Ishikawa on crosswalk flashing signals (“Use flashing beacons, signals,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Feb. 6). In an effort to stop pedestrian accidents in crosswalks, I recommend a similar setup like at Naval Station Pearl Harbor.
The city should install LED rapid- flashing beacons on overhead diamond plates on either side of all crosswalks. They can be activated by pedestrians on either the current push-button device or a body sensor for approximately 30-40 seconds to alert drivers of pedestrians in the crosswalks.
Additionally, repaint all crosswalk rectangular blocks with a safety fluorescent color instead of the current white for better visibility, especially in inclement weather. Lastly, if we stress more on driver alertness, awareness, better visual aids and pedestrian safety first, we can ensure no more pedestrian accidents in 2019.
