Shooting suspect found dead on roadway near Wahiawa is identified

BRUCE ASATO / MARCH 31

A shooting occurred last weekend near Kamehameha Highway at Kamananui Road outside of Wahiawa.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death of a 30-year-old man, whose body was found in the middle of a roadway outside Wahiawa, as a suicide.

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Dallas Kaahanui of Wahiawa, and said he died of a gunshot wound to the head.

A California couple told police the man jumped in front of a van they were driving behind while heading south on Kamehameha Highway, and made demands while pointing a firearm at them.

They allege he shot once and struck the 34-year-old wife, who was driving.

The couple pulled over and called 911 to report what happened, police said.

Emergency Medical Services transported her in stable condition to Wahiawa General Hospital.

The husband was not injured.

Responding officers found the man dead on Kamehameha Highway at Kamananui Road and recovered a weapon at the scene.

Police had classified the case as a first-degree attempted murder and unattended death.
