Many Honolulu folks and visitors flock to the Ka Iwi Coast for water sports and hiking and gazing. Since February it has been plagued with “No Parking Beyond” signs that have greatly reduced places to park — and thereby access to this beautiful place for recreation. At the same time, vehicles are being driven behind the signs through the natural dunes, beach and native vegetation. What kind of authority takes away needed parking yet permits wanton driving behind the signs? Certainly a nonsensical program.
Solutions are right in plain sight: Allow parking along the pole barrier just off the highway along Sandy Beach Park — it was allowed my first 33 years here; why has it been suddenly disallowed?
Second, Wawamalu Beach has excellent barren and flat areas at either end. Demarcate these spaces for parking while erecting barriers to keep vehicles out of the dunes, natural vegetation, beach rock and beach.
Just like that, nature will be protected and parking available.
