I’ve been tracking cemetery vandalism in Hawaii for more 20 years. The toppling of more than 20 tombstones at Kawaiahao Church Cemetery is one of the most egregious cases that I’ve ever seen (“Families disturbed by vandalism of over 20 headstones at Kawaiaha‘o Church cemetery,” Star-Advertiser, July 4). It’s so very heartbreaking to see such a senseless and sacrilegious affront to one of our most precious historical landmarks.
Because I have seen similar damage done in various ethnic cemeteries, I don’t think this destruction was racially motivated, as some believe.
Although the damage is dramatic to see close up, all of the stones can be reset, with professional assistance, and the church is fully committed to seeing that the work is done in a timely and conscientious manner.
Throughout the 200-year history of the cemetery, many obstacles have been overcome. I have no doubt that this episode will be resolved with perseverance and grace.
