I’m a local volunteer with Moms Demand Action and we applaud Gov. David Ige’s recent enactment of a “red flag” gun law here (“Ige signs ‘red flag’ gun bill,” Star-Advertiser, June 28). Hawaii has long been a leader in the area of common-sense gun laws and gun safety, and we are fortunate to have a governor and legislators dedicated to preserving that example.
This red-flag law establishes a process that can keep volatile situations from escalating into tragedy. The separation of a person in crisis from their guns is temporary. When gun violence occurs, the victim’s loss of life and the grief and pain suffered by survivors are permanent.
Red flag laws are a common-sense way to save lives, as demonstrated by the statistics in states that have enacted them. Mahalo nui loa to Ige and the legislators who work so diligently to keep us safe.
