There have been two letters published recently bemoaning the cost to builders and buyers from City Council Bill 25 regarding electric vehicle chargers (“Requiring EV chargers will raise cost of homes,” Oct. 1; “EV charger mandate bad for new housing,” Sept. 29). A lot of misunderstanding here.
The bill does not apply to new single-family homes, therefore it cannot raise their price. It only applies to new residential multi-unit buildings with eight or more parking stalls and new commercial buildings with 12 or more parking stalls. In addition, the new multi-level residential requirement is for only Level 1 chargers. This is a regular electrical outlet. Only 25% of the stalls need to be charger ready, so that would mean a regular electrical outlet in only two of eight stalls.
With new commercial buildings, the requirement is for Level 2 charging but it is still only 25%, and I can say that there is no better, or cheaper, time to do this wiring than during construction, as many older buildings that want to update can attest.
In 1 A.T. (After Trump), the need to turn our attention to climate change will make this necessary.
