Big Isle firefighters rescue woman swept over 30-foot waterfall

Hawaii County Fire Department personnel rescued a swimmer clinging onto the side of a riverbank in Pi’ihonua Monday afternoon.

At 1:28 p.m., the first of 15 personnel responded to a swimmer in distress, a woman in her 30s, who the department said was swept over a 30-foot waterfall.

With the help of the fire department, a helicopter and a Billy Pugh net, the swimmer was rescued from the river.

She was transported via ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center emergency room in stable condition.
