Paia blaze fully contained, Maui Fire Department says
The Maui Fire Department says a brush fire that burned approximately 600 acres in Paia was fully contained Sunday morning and all roadways in the area have been reopened to traffic.
The blaze was initially reported at 1:07 p.m. Saturday in the area of Holomua Road near the Doris Todd Christian Academy. Maui police responded to multiple calls of people having trouble breathing due to thick smoke from the fire. Residents of nearby Skill village were advised to shelter in place, while others in the vicinity of Baldwin Avenue were asked to evacuate.
According to MFD, two department helicopters made water drops in support of firefighters from five engine companies, with additional assistance from private water tanker crews.
Baldwin Avenue reopened to the public at approximately 1 a.m.
