Woman, 21, in critical condition after hit-and-run in Halawa

Honolulu police are investigating a Friday night hit-and-run in Halawa that has left a 21-year-old woman in critical condition.

At about 11:50 p.m. Friday, police said an unidentified vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man was traveling northbound on Kahuapaani Street prior to Ala Alii Street and struck the 21-year-old pedestrian who was crossing Kahuapaani Street in a marked crosswalk but did not have the right of way. The driver subsequently fled the scene and later returned.

Police arrested the man, who was suspected to be under the influence, on suspicion of failure to render aid, negligent injury in the first degree, and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in the collision, but not speed.

The investigation is ongoing.
